Step into La Morenita, and you're instantly drawn in by the inviting aroma of freshly made tortillas and rich, slow-cooked dishes. The menu is a fiesta of flavors, featuring standout specialties like the Chilaquiles Rojos Con Carne Asada — tender grilled steak paired with perfectly crisped tortilla chips bathed in a vibrant red salsa; the Huevos Divorciados, embodying two distinct sauces that awaken your palate in the morning; and the soul-warming Café De Olla, a spiced Mexican coffee that beautifully complements the hearty dishes.
Don’t miss the Birria, a slow-braised, deeply flavorful meat stew revered for its rich, comforting broth, or the Chicken Tacos Dorados, golden and crispy with a satisfying crunch in every bite. Guests also rave about the freshly made Enchiladas Mexicanas and the hand-crafted tortillas that elevate every meal experience. The menu thoughtfully caters to varied tastes, with light yet flavorful options like the Chilaquiles Verdes and the refreshing cucumber lemonade touted by customers.
The dining atmosphere at La Morenita is an intimate and culturally immersive experience. A highlight for many is the charming little backyard patio, lovingly tended and perfect for an al fresco meal. Alma, the passionate new owner, personally ensures every guest feels at home — whether recommending vegan treats like guacamole and nopal (cactus) salad or sharing stories behind each dish. This attentiveness creates a genuine, heartfelt dining vibe that keeps people coming back.
What stands out most from customer experiences is the combination of traditional flavors with a personal touch that evokes nostalgia and warmth. Patrons often share that their meals remind them of family cooking, enhanced by the freshness of handmade tortillas and the sincerity of friendly service. The portions are generous, the prices reasonable, and the presentation thoughtfully done — a trifecta that leaves diners both satisfied and eager for the next visit.
Whether you’re craving the iconic Menudo that transports you back to home-cooked breakfasts or indulging in the layered flavors of a Chalupa, La Morenita delivers a memorable, unapologetically authentic Mexican food journey in every bite. It’s no surprise that this hotspot on Broadway continues to grow in popularity, blending tradition, heart, and hospitality under one roof.
Amazing food 10/10. The chilaquiles de mole, Gordita de asada, & cafe de olla were super delicious. Will definitely be back!
Alma is the new owner and she is an amazing host. Such a cute authentic Mexican experience with the most beautiful little back covered patio. My girlfriend is vegan and Alma made sure to serve us amazing guacamole and a napoles (cactus) salad that she insisted for her to try... I got birria and we also shared this fantastic cucumber lemonade drink that was so refreshing on a hot day... oh, and the homemade corn tortilla, oh my!
I was craving Menudo and decided to check this place out. Best decision made! I was an early bird so there weren’t many ppl there yet. Got the cafe de olla and menudo with tortillas. I opted to not get pata (feet bone). It was so delicious! Reminded me of my mom’s cooking. The service was also super attentive. It was such a welcomed surprise that the tortillas were handmade.
Excellent food here. The chalupa is one of a kind. Very big portions at very reasonable prices in my opinion. I had 2 tacos and a chalupa and I wanted to sleep right away. Very cool servers and great food!
The food is better than it's ever been. They make the corn tortillas on site and you can rent their space for parties. I cannot stress enough that the food has never been better and the presentation makes it taste even better. It's a great overall vibe and I enjoy my meal more than I used to. They do update their menu every so often to keep up with customers and have recently added crepes on the weekends.
Street parking out front (metered) or parking in the back. Back Entrance available. Came on a Saturday morning. Not busy. Seated right away. Chips and salsa were great. The food was fast and delicious. Cafe de olla. Service was great. Positive experience. Pet friendly patio!
AUTHENTIC Mexican Food. It reminds me of the home-cooking of my grandmother. Unapologetically traditional with some of the best mole and enchiladas I’ve had in Lincoln Heights, let alone Los Angeles. Cafe de Olla is definitely recommended, always comes with a little cinnamon wafer cookie to dunk in it. Probably my favorite Mexican brunch spot, make sure to eat in the outside patio in the back if it’s not too crowded.
I found parking right in the front. I wasn’t greeted at the entrance, coming in from the street, (no workers were around and not sure if the entrance is on the back). I did peek in the back and there was a beautiful patio. It was my first time coming here. The staff here on my visit were amicable. I came during lunch and the place was busy. The food was freshly served, handmade tortillas, but took a long wait. I will give this place all the stars because the food was fresh and tasty and waiter had a positive attitude. I will come again during breakfast and update my review.
